Shining a light on basketball

1. FIFA & UEFA

The FIFA and UEFA corruption case exposed bribery, fraud, and money laundering among top officials. Whistleblowers provided key evidence. Investigations revealed vote-buying for World Cup hosting and unethical marketing deals. U.S. and Swiss authorities indicted many executives, prompting suspensions, resignations, and governance reforms across global football.

2. Melbourne Storm salary cap breaches

In 2010, Melbourne Storm was found to have systematically breached the NRL salary cap by over $3.17 million from 2006 to 2010. The club used dual contracts and inflated invoices to conceal payments. As a result, they were stripped of two premierships, three minor premierships, and fined $1.7 million.

3. 1980s rugby league

In the 1980s, NSWRL chairman Kevin Humphreys was exposed for misusing league funds and engaging in corrupt financial practices. A public investigation and Royal Commission followed, leading to his resignation and conviction. The scandal prompted major governance reforms in Australian rugby league, including stricter financial oversight and transparency across the sport.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an opportunity for whistleblower compensation?

That will depend on what people want to disclose and the direction they want to take. Mr Neiman has legal partners in Australia who can advise whistleblowers and support them if they wish to pursue a claim.

Who are Jeffrey Neiman and Pav Gill, what is their track record?

Jeffrey Neiman

A champion of whistleblower protections, Jeffrey Neiman is an experienced trial lawyer who regularly defends individuals and corporations in white collar criminal litigation, matters involving tax controversies, government regulatory enforcement matters, internal investigations, compliance counselling, and complex civil litigation. Jeff has tried more than a dozen white collar matters in federal court. Mr. Neiman works for a litigation boutique focused on winning high stakes fights for its clients.

Most recently, he acted on behalf of whistleblowers against Credit Suisse, securing penalties for the bank of $511m.

Pav Gill

Pav is lawyer and founder of Confide Platform who blew the whistle on the Wirecard scandal, one of the largest corporate frauds in history.

An experienced Magic Circle lawyer and fintech general counsel, Pav has witnessed firsthand the challenges organisations face in handling internal reports, from conflicts of interest matters and HR conflicts to financial crimes. This inspired him to create a comprehensive technology solution that serves as a secure reporting tool with the ability to conduct investigations entirely within the platform.

How is my data protected?

All data is encrypted in transit and at rest, and stored securely in ISO 27001 certified data centers. Additional layers of security and encryption are applied to the most sensitive parts of reports, ensuring strict protection across all stages of the reporting and case management process.

While the submission of data does not create a lawyer-client relationship, it will be treated as confidential.

What protections do I have if I provide information?

You decide what you are comfortable disclosing. The website provides a function to share information in a confidential and anonymous manner. Whistleblowers will also be able to potentially engage with the law firm by submitting information through the website.

Alternatively, if you feel comfortable to liaise with us and local legal counsel on legal strategy, that option is also available.

Why is Mr Neiman, a US-based attorney taking up this work?

As a result of the extensive media coverage, a number of whistleblowers have reached out to parties referred to in those stories. They are limited in how they can help, which has led to Mr Neiman taking an interest in investigating the issues.

There is a long history of US law being used to prosecute corrupt sports organisations based outside the US, including high-profile corruption cases involving football bodies FIFA and UEFA.

The establishment of jurisdiction is based on US investors, gamblers or players who are wronged by a particular system. For example, the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) was used to prosecute corrupt FIFA officials around the world.
